Neuroverse 12. A Podcast by Neuroverse: Tools for Looking into the Brain - Calcium, Cortex, and Cortical Flexibility (with Dr. Matthew Harvey)
About the episode
In episode twelve of Tools for Looking into the Brain, produced in collaboration with the Neuroverse Podcast, Clara and Carolina sit down with Dr. Matthew Harvey- a medical doctor turned neuroscientist and postdoctoral researcher at the Francis Crick Institute. Matt’s work focuses on cortical dynamics during behaviour.
Matt shares insights from his doctoral research on cortical flexibility in a mouse model of a neurodevelopmental disorder (a neurexin 1-alpha knockout) and explains how he used wide-field calcium imaging to investigate cortex-wide activity during learning and flexible decision-making. The conversation also explores the overlapping and complex genetic foundations of neurodevelopmental disorders, and what’s next for translational research aimed at better connecting clinical and preclinical studies in this area.
About Dr. Matthew Harvey
Matthew Harvey originally trained as a medical doctor before moving into academia to pursue a PhD in neuroscience at King’s College London in Adil Khan’s lab. During his doctorate, he studied cortex-wide neural activity during learning and flexible decision-making in mouse models of neurodevelopmental disorders. He is now a postdoctoral researcher in Flor Iacaruso’s lab at the Francis Crick Institute, where his work focuses on impulsivity and cognitive control.

About Carolina and Clara
Carolina and Clara are both neuroscientists and curious about the world and our perception of it. Their love for exploring ideas and bridging connections across various disciplines drew them to the interdisciplinary field of neuroscience. Together, they established Neuroverse as a platform for exploring and sharing ideas within and beyond neuroscience. Their goal is to create content that is accessible and engaging for both scientists and non-scientists alike.
