Postdoc Position, ex vivo neurophysiology, at Helmholtz Zentrum München

Location: Munich, Germany

The Lab

NAPSlab, a member of the Institute of Neurogenomics (ING), is recruiting a postdoctoral scientist. We investigate the neuronal and astrocytic basis of mammalian sleep using state-of-the-art neurotechnology.

The Position

NAPSlab utilises cutting-edge technologies to investigate the role of neurons and astrocytes in sensing sleep pressure and driving appropriate homeostatic responses. In collaboration with other members of the ING (Director: Juliane Winkelmann), we also generate and characterize transgenic mouse models with sleep abnormalities.

In this position, you would characterize sleep in mice while monitoring and perturbing the activity of neurons and astrocytes (calcium imaging, optogenetics, chemogenetics).

The Candidate

Ideally you will have a PhD degree in Life Sciences and a background in ex vivo electrophysiology, preferably whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology. Familiarity with ex vivo optogenetics, calcium imaging, and/or chemogenetics is a plus.

Candidates with experience in one or more of the following are encouraged to apply:

  • Ex vivo electrophysiological recordings from brain slices and/or cell culture.
  • Animal handling skills (FELASA B training or equivalent).
  • Strong computer programming and data analysis skills (e.g. Igor).
  • Excellent skills in scientific writing and communication (English).

Writing manuscripts and applying for independent grants and fellowships are encouraged.

You will be expected to work closely with members of NAPSlab to complete the research goals. You will receive mentorship in launching a career as an independent investigator subsequent to the fellowship, and will be expected to present your research findings at national and international conferences.

While beneficial, there is no requirement to be proficient in German for this position.
