PhD position in Neuroscience at the Center for Neurosciences (C4N) at the VUB

Position: PhD position in Neuroscience

Location: Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels, Belgium

Start Date: 1st November 2024

Introduction

The current prevalence of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is conservatively estimated at 6%. Despite profound effects on sufferers’ wellbeing due to myriad symptoms including but not limited to anxiety, depression, fatigue, itch, and orthostatic intolerance, about half of these patients are unaware that hyperhidrosis is a medical condition related to the autonomic nervous system. To investigate the pathogenesis of hyperhidrosis, we initiated a large-scale exome sequencing project consisting of an unprecedented pool of hyperhidrosis patients and identified mutations in voltage-gated ion channels and a neuronal transcription factor as clinically relevant. To investigate the involvement of these genes in hyperhidrosis, we are creating a realistic animal model in which therapeutics can be tested. By doing so, we expect to generate pioneering insights into the relationship between dysautonomia and hyperhidrosis which, in turn, can help lay the foundation for dramatically improving the quality of life of these patients.

Job description

For this project, we are seeking a highly qualified student holding an M.Sc. or equivalent degree with a background in one or several of the following fields: Neuroscience, (Neuro)biology, Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, or Biophysics. Preference will be given to an enthusiastic student with hands-on experience in ex vivo (cell/slice) electrophysiology and/or mouse neuroanatomy. An additional expectation is that the student is a critical thinker, is open to learning multiple techniques including machine-learning approaches, and has an abundance of motivation to make the project a success.

For more than 50 years, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel has stood for freedom, equality and solidarity, and this is very much alive on our campuses among students and staff alike. At the VUB, you will find a diverse collection of personalities, but above all people who are 100% their authentic selves. With some 4,000 employees, we are the largest Dutch-speaking employer, in the private sector, in Brussels; an international city with which we are only too happy to connect and where (around) our 4 campuses are located. Add to this our principle of free research - in which self-reflection, a critical attitude and an open, creative mind around scientific and social issues are central - and you have a university that is fundamentally ground-breaking and pioneering in education and research.
